About Syllabus 5.0

Since its initial conception, the ECDL / ICDL syllabus has continually evolved to reflect changes in technology and its use. In 2007, ECDL Foundation conducted a substantial review of ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 4.0 in order to ensure that it reflected ongoing advances in technologies and relevant practices. This resulted in the completion of ECDL / ICDL Syllabus 5.0 which will be phased in by national operators during 2009.

ECDL Foundation's programme development processes use a wide range of expert input from the world's leading computer societies and independent subject matter experts, guaranteeing the quality and relevance of the ECDL / ICDL Syllabus.

How to become an approved Test Centers

The primary goal of the ICDL program is to promote digital literacy among the global population based on unified, high standards of competence and integrity. As the governing body of the ICDL program in the Gulf region, ICDL GCC Foundation does not develop content or provide training and testing to candidates. Instead, we rely on reputable organizations and vendors to provide such solutions and services under strict globally unified standards and quality assurance measures.

A key feature of our quality assurance requirements is the ICDL accreditation process of training and testing centers. The center accreditation process enables prospective centers to demonstrate their ability to deliver quality training and support of candidates preparing for the ICDL certification. Centers seeking accreditation are required to submit a formal letter on corporate letterhead explaining the purpose of seeking accreditation. Upon receipt and consent of the ICDL management team, an application form will be emailed to the prospective center to be completed and returned for review by our Accreditation Committee.

Upon approval by the Committee, the accreditation process commences with a scrutiny of the application form, followed by a number of visits by QA Field Officers to the prospective center, to validate meeting a list of requirements to support the delivery of the program. This includes, but is not limited to, an assessment of the premises, validation of trade and software licenses, and qualifying the staff members operating the prospective center. Successful completion and scrutiny of the application form entitles the center to an approval visit. Approval visits are normally conducted within eight weeks from the completed application is received.

Every prospective center must have two staff members having completed their ICDL certification and at least one staff member nominated to enroll in the ICDL Certified Training Professional (CTP) program. The objective behind the latter is to underpin the ICDL program�s best practices and core values of excellence and integrity.

Subsequent to center approval but prior to beginning the delivery of training and testing, all staff members involved with the ICDL program from the prospective center must attend a workshop to be oriented with the QA standards, procedure and process to administer the program within the center and the installation of the testing software. The entire process of accreditation is kept strictly confidential by the ICDL GCC Foundation.

Approved Courseware & Training Materials

ICDL training is carried out by third party ICDL Approved Training Centers; and ICDL GCC Foundation does not develop courseware and training material for the ICDL program. Instead, we rely on leading industry experts to develop training and learning content. Training material is considered an essential part of the ICDL program and a pillar to its quality assurance standard. Accordingly, all ICDL material undergo a stringent review and approval process before it is distributed in the region, to ensure that it complies with the ICDL syllabus and adheres to the localization sensitivies of the local culture. The use of ICDL Approved Courseware is a requisite on all ICDL Approved Training Centers to guarantee maximum benefit to the ICDL candiates.

ICDL GCC Foundation is the sole point of contact for all courseware vendors seeking regional approval for their courseware. Here's a list of the 'Preferred Approved Courseware Providers' and the 'Approved courseware Providers' who sumitted their courseware and training material for review and approval; and they are all entitled to carry the ICDL GCC Foundation Approved Courseware logo.

Test Partner

Approved testing is only offered via Automated Testing Software (ATS) in the GCC Region. Exams are provided by ICDL GCC Foundation to Approved Test Centers and then to ICDL Candidates.

The Automated Testing Software providers in the GCC Region have created exams for ICDL Syllabus 4.0 based on various software versions. This is done in order to provide ICDL candidates with familiar surroundings or simulations in which to complete their exams.
